Demons End Season as Area Champions with 26-7 Record

AMARILLO, TX – The Dumas Demons’ historic season ended Tuesday with a lopsided 70-41 setback to the Hereford Whitefaces in a Class 4A Regional Quarterfinals matchup at Tascosa High School.

Dumas, which captured its first playoff wins in 51 years last week, ended the season with a 26-7 record.

Hereford (19-14) opened the game with a 5-0 run before the Demons hit back-to-back buckets to make it a one-point affair. But the Whitefaces drilled a trio of three-pointers to grab a 17-11 lead after eight minutes of play.

Junior Matthew Reynaga – who finished with seven points – started the second quarter with a basket to cut the lead to four points, and a put-back from sophomore Dominic Gardipe made the score 20-15. However, Hereford ended the half with a 16-4 run to take a commanding 36-19 advantage into the locker room.

Senior Johnny Reynaga scored five points to open the third quarter, but Dumas shot just 1-for-7 from behind the arc and committed four turnovers as the Whitefaces outscored the Demons 16-9 to hold a 52-28 lead en route to the quarterfinal victory.

Junior center Evan Hernandez tallied a team-high nine points and six rebounds, while senior co-captain Cristian Kelso had eight points and a pair of assists.

Gardipe posted six points and two boards, and senior co-captain Johnny Reynaga added five points, four rebounds, and five assists.

Voters Will Decide on Sunday Beer Sales Ordinace

DUMAS, TX – The Dumas City Commission voted no on Tuesday to the question “Shall the ordinance specified in the referendum petition be repealed?” With the vote, the commission sends ordinance #1205 to Dumas voters in November to make the final decision.

Sunday beer sales in Dumas were just beginning under the new ordinance but store owners will now have to pause Sunday beer sales until November when voters make the final decision on the matter.

The Dumas City Commission action comes after a local group began gathering signatures in January on a petition seeking to have Dumas voters decide if beer sales should be allowed in Dumas on Sundays. Historically beer sales on Sunday inside Dumas city limits have been regulated by City of Dumas ordinance #983. The new changes would essentially de-regulate beer sales in Dumas on Sundays.

Dumas citizens have had many discussions with city hall on the beer topic over the years. The Moore County Journal has covered the issue since 2016 when commissioners faced local opposition to changes in Dumas law that would allow alcohol in city parks. The commission ultimately changed the law in 2021 and the first beers were served in McDade Park last summer.

Dumas voters will have the last word on the latest beer issue in a November election.

Petition Forces Vote on New Beer Ordinance

0

DUMAS, TX – A recently passed ordinance pertaining to the sale of beer in Dumas is headed back to the City Commission after a group of citizens filed a petition seeking to have the new ordinance decided on by Dumas voters.

On January 4, 2022, the Dumas City Commission voted to approve Ordinance #1205 which amended an older ordinance (#983) and changed local regulations dealing with the sale of beer within the city of Dumas.

The minutes from the January 4th city commission meeting state “Chris A. Rivera presented the Second and Final Reading of Ordinance No. 1205 amending Ordinance No. 983 section 4.02.006 hours for sale of beer & wine. Terry Wiley and Mark Jennings spoke in favor of Ordinance No. 1205. Janice Stone, Charley Roys, Shirley Roys spoke in opposition of Ordinance No. 1205. A motion was made by Commissioner Willis, seconded by Commissioner Maples, and passed unanimously to approve the Second and Final Reading of Ordinance No. 1205 as presented.”

A group of local citizens formed a committee after the new ordinance became law seeking to have the matter placed on the ballot for voters to decide.

“As we have visited with different individuals, those for and opposed to this ordinance, they have shared the same opinion. This ordinance should have been placed on a general ballot so the whole of Dumas, TX was truly represented.” Mark Jennings told the Moore County Journal on January 20.

Jennings along with 5 other petitioners began collecting signatures in late January for a referendum on the ordinance. At that time Jennings said the group needed to collect at least 150 signatures from registered City of Dumas voters. The group collected 184 signatures and submitted the petition to City of Dumas Secretary Tonya Montoya.

On February 11th Montoya said the original petition was insufficient and 46 of the 184 signatures collected were rejected. That left only 139 valid signatures remaining which was short of the required 150 signatures needed.

The current city charter allowed the petitioners ten days to remedy the deficiencies and file a supplementary petition to correct the noted insufficiencies. Jennings says he and the group began collecting signatures again and presented almost 300 signatures in their supplementary petition.

Friday the group received a Certificate of City Secretary from Montoya regarding the petition. In the certificate, Ms. Montoya notes that she received the supplementary petition on February 22nd, found that the petition was sufficient, and outlined the next steps which will be taken.

First, the ordinance will be reconsidered by the City Commission. According to the current city charter, which lays out the repeal process, “A referred ordinance shall be reconsidered by the commission…” The commission’s vote on the reconsideration will be to answer one question, “Shall the ordinance specified in the referendum petition be repealed?”

If the ordinance is repealed by the City Commission, Ordinance #1205 will no longer be in effect and no further action will be taken. However, if the City Commission does not repeal the ordinance it will be sent to voters in November to decide whether the new “beer” ordinance remains or is repealed.

The City Commission will consider and act on the petition at its March 1st meeting.

VEGA, TX – Cristian Kelso scored 22 points to help the Dumas Demons capture their first playoff victory since 1971 with a lopsided 69-39 victory over the Levelland Lobos Tuesday in a Class 4A Region 1 Bi-District Playoff encounter at Vega High School.

Kelso turned in a stellar outing on both ends of the court. The senior scored the first six points of the game for Dumas and finished with four rebounds, six steals, and four assists.

“It’s a crazy moment, Kelso told Big Country 95.3 after the final buzzer. “It was a really fun game, I’m just so happy to bring it back to Dumas.”

Levelland (12-23) grabbed an early 2-0 lead before the Demons reeled off eight straight points. Johnny Reynaga scored seven of his 12 points in the opening quarter to help Dumas take a 15-10 lead after eight minutes of action.

“We knew we had to push the tempo like we always do,” said Reynaga. “They like to run their set plays on offense to slow the tempo down, but we executed and played our game.”

“It’s (playoff victory) special to us, Coach Ray, to the whole community of Dumas,” added the senior point guard.

The Demons broke open a tight game with a dominant second quarter. Junior Matthew Reynaga, who tallied 10 points, drilled a three-pointer to start the onslaught and Dumas outscored the Lobos 20-9 to take a commanding 35-19 lead into the locker room.

The Lobos opened the second half with back-to-back buckets, but three-point bombs from seniors Issac Ortiz and Jerry Rodriguez pushed the lead to 41-23. Levelland answered back with a pair of baskets before the Demons went on a 14-4 run to end the quarter with a 55-31 advantage.

Kelso and junior shooting guard Nathan Gomez combined to score 11 of the Demons’ 14 points in the final quarter to help Dumas win its first playoff game in over half a century.

Gomez finished with six points, two rebounds, and a pair of assists, while 6-foot-7 junior Evan Hernandez had four points and five rebounds.

Senior Khamarion Williams posted four points and three steals for coach Randy Ray’s squad, and the trio of Ortiz, Rodriguez, and Dominic Gardipe finished with three points apiece.

“It hasn’t really hit me yet,” exclaimed Ray. “It kind of feels like I am in a dream right now. 51 years is a long time so it’s really good to get that little monkey off our backs.”

Dumas (25-6) will battle the San Elizario Eagles (23-10) Friday at 6 p.m. in an Area Round matchup at Seminole High School.

Demonettes Defeat Lady Bulldogs with 2-1 Home Win

DUMAS, TX – Junior Arisbeth Loya split two defenders and notched the go-ahead goal with less than four minutes to play to lift the Dumas Demonettes past the Borger Lady Bulldogs, 2-1, Tuesday in a District 4-4A matchup at Demon Stadium.

With the win, the Demonettes take sole possession of second-place with five games remaining in the regular season.

Dumas dominated the first period with an array of shots on goal. The Demonettes missed a golden opportunity at the 38:07 mark when an errant shot hit the side of the net, and five minutes later a corner kick was almost booted into the goal.

Although the Demonettes consistently peppered the Borger goalie with shots, it was the Lady Bulldogs who broke the scoreless deadlock with 10 minutes left in the opening period.

Dumas finally broke through in the second period when Lesly Chavez scored on a nifty pass from Tori Harris to knot the score at 1-all.

The score remained unchanged and the two teams, which battled to a 3-3 draw in their first meeting, seemed destined for another tie. However, Loya would have none of that.

The junior took the ball at the 15-yard line, went right before going between two defenders, and blasted a shot past the goalie for the winning score.

The Demonettes will travel to Happy State Bank Stadium Friday for a district clash with the first-place Canyon Lady Eagles.
