TRACK & FIELD

DUMAS, TX – The Dumas boy’s and girl’s track team both finished second Friday at the Quad Meet at Dumas. Besides Dumas, the meet also included Amarillo High School, Tascosa High School, and Caprock High School.

Juan Romero and Matthew Reynaga finished first and second, respectively, in the 300-meter hurdles. Romero and Reynaga also placed second and third in the 110-meter hurdles.

The 1600 Relay team consisting of Romero, Oliver Ortiz, Emmanuel Ibanez, and Brayden Boggs-Rushing also captured top honors. The Demons 400 and 800 Relay teams both finished in second place.

Ibanez and Lance Ottinger placed second and third in the pole vault event, while Dalton Leven finished second in the shot-put competition.

In the discus event, Leven placed fourth and Arnoldo Hernadez finished in third place. Edward Arya placed fourth in the long jump event.

Aaron Lawrence was runner-up in the high jump competition while teammates Peyton Powers and Reece Waddell finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

David Valdez and Brian Corona placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 800-meter run, and Noah Williams finished third in the 1600-meter race and fourth in the 3200-meter race.

Josh Flores and Brayden Boggs-Rushing finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the triple jump competition.

Puentes, Lujan Pace Demonettes’ Tracksters

Karina Puentes and Mia Lujan continued their stellar track season with standout performances at the Dumas Quad Meet last Friday.

Puentes won the 100-meter race and the long jump event and was also a member of the Dumas 800 and 1600 Relay teams that both posted first-place finishes.

Lujan swept both the 1600 and 3200-meter races and has quietly established herself as one of the top distance runners in West Texas.

Arelie Vasquez won the 400-meter race while teammates Yaharia Lujan and Janely Lozoya finished second and third, respectively.

Sarai Chavez and Kennedy Clements placed first and second in the 800-meter run, and Clements also finished third in the 1600-meter run.

Rocio Mendoza came in third place in both the 1600 and 3200-meter races, while Lyza Hernandez finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Kira Fierro placed third in the triple jump event and Brooklyn Sianez finished third in the high jump competition.

Dumas will be competing at the District Meet on April 14-15 at Borger High School.

SOFTBALL

DUMAS, TX – Amery Casanova drilled her second long ball of the season to help the Dumas Demonettes snap a three-game skid with a 12-2 victory Monday over the Hereford Lady Whitefaces at the Inferno Field.

Dumas (21-10, 3-4) took an early lead on a run-scoring double from Cami Velasquez that plated Sania Reyes in the opening frame. But Hereford answered back with a pair of runs in the second to go on top, 2-1.

The Demonettes responded with a seven-run uprising at the bottom of the same frame. Casanova highlighted the big inning with a three-run blast to give Dumas a commanding 8-2 lead.

A two-out double off the bat of Melaney Granados ignited a two-run third inning to increase the lead to 10-2. Reyes plated Granados with a two-bagger and crossed the plate on an RBI single from Velasquez

Dumas capped the scoring in the fifth with two more runs. Katie Contreras scored on an error and Reyes collected her third RBI of the game with a base hit that plated Hannah Hernandez.

Briana Vargas scattered two runs on four hits and three walks over five innings to notch the win.

Hernandez, Reyes, Velasquez, and Contreras tallied two hits apiece for a Dumas squad that collected 12 hits.

The Demonettes will be on the road Friday for a district encounter against the Perryton Rangerettes (2-20, 0-7).

Pampa 10, Dumas 1

The second-place Lady Harvesters dealt the Demonettes their third straight district loss last Friday at Pampa High School.

Hannah Hernandez, Sania Reyes, and Amery Casanova finished with one hit apiece, while Jessa Fry, Jalila Chairez, and Ashley Suggs reached on free passes.

BASEBALL

DUMAS, TX – The Hereford Whitefaces scored six late runs to defeat the Dumas Demons, 7-3, Monday in a District 4-4A encounter at Demon Field.

Dumas (8-13, 3-3) collected four consecutive one-out singles in the opening frame to grab an early 2-0 advantage. Zach Thompson’s two-run base hit plated Armando Cardenas and Imanol Marquez.

The Demons pushed the lead to three runs with a score in the third. Thompson laced a triple to centerfield that scored Angel Torres. However, the Whitefaces began the comeback trail an inning later.

Hereford plated a run in the fourth before scoring three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to claim the unlikely victory.

Raul Bustamante (3-2) took the loss after running out of gas late. The senior hurler allowed eight hits, a walk, and four earned runs with 12 strikeouts over 6.2 frames.

Thompson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to pace the Demons, while Bustamante tallied a pair of hits and Jesus Rodriguez collected three hits.

Dumas will travel to Perryton on Friday for a 12-noon clash against the Rangers (7-8-1, 1-5).

Pampa 6, Dumas 3

The Pampa Harvesters used a five-run second inning to deal the Dumas Demons a District 4-4A road loss last Friday at Pampa High School.

Senior right fielder Aiden Gutierrez posted three hits while Raul Bustamante and Jesus Rodriguez collected an RBI apiece.

Cameron Carlile (3-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs and eight hits over six innings of work.

SOCCER

DUMAS, TX – Four Dumas Demons were named to the 2021-22 District 2-4A All-District soccer teams announced recently. The All-District squads are selected by the district coaches.

Senior midfielder Felix Ibarra and sophomore Omary Mavune were both tabbed 1st Team All-District. Ibarra, who scored six goals and provided 12 assists during his junior campaign, was the Demons leading scorer this past season.

Tony Sosa and Lorenzo Ibarra were both selected 2nd Team All-District. Sosa was named to the 2022 WTAMU Showcase All-Tournament Team, while Ibarra is a freshman who enjoyed a breakout season.

TENNIS

LUBBOCK, TX – The Dumas boys and girl’s doubles tennis teams will be competing at the Region I-4A Tennis Tournament on April 13-14 at the McLeod Tennis Center at Texas Tech University.

The boy’s doubles team of Frances Kaing and Eh Kuh Soe placed second at the district tournament at Bowie Middle School to advance to the regional competition.

The girl’s doubles duo of Christi Medrano and Karitza Bencommo, who narrowly missed being district champions, finished second with a playback win over Borger to advance to the regional tournament.
