TRACK

SAN ANGELO, TX – The Dumas Demons captured first place last weekend at the 63rd San Angelo Relays, while the Demonettes placed second at the annual track and field competition at San Angelo Stadium.

The Demons tallied 129 points in Division II to outclass Fort Stockton (113) and San Angelo Lake View (84)

Oliver Ortiz won the 400 meters run with a time of 49.82, while Emmanuel Ibanez and Lance Ottinger finished first and second in the Pole Vault event with leaps of 14-6 and 13-0, respectively.

Dumas’ 4×100 relay team consisting of Ortiz, Hunter Coaly, Emmanuel Ibanez, and Brayden Boggs-Rushing took top honors with a time of 44.21. Coaly finished fourth in the 100 meters run with an impressive time of 11.10.

The 4×400 relay team of Ortiz, Ibanez, Juan Romero, and Josh Flores finished narrowly missed winning the gold with a time of 3:25.15, and the Demons’ 4×200 relay team placed third with a time of 1:32.34.

Ibanez (20-8 3/4) and teammate Edward Arya (20-8) finished second and third in the long jump, and Matthew Reynaga came in third place with a time of 15.96 in the 110-meter hurdles.

Juan Romero turned in a time of 40.62 to finish third in the 300-meter hurdles while Reynaga (42.34) placed fourth. Dalton Levin came in fourth place in the Discus throw.

Aaron Lawrence and Nate Gomez finished fifth and sixth in the high jump event, while Josh Flores came in fourth in the 200-meter run. Noah Williams netted a pair of fourth-place finishes in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races.

Demonettes Place Second at San Angelo Relays

Karina Puentes won the long jump event with a leap of 17-1 1/4 to help the Demonettes finish second in Division IV behind Andrews.

Sarai Chavez finished second in the 800-meter run, while Mia Lujan placed third in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races.

Michelle Loya finished fourth in the 200-meter run, Yahaira Lujan came in fifth in the 1,600-meter event, and Arelie Vasquez placed fifth in the 400-meter race.

The Demonettes 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams both finished in second place, while the 4×100 relay team came in fourth place.

The 4×200 relay team consisted of Puentes, Rylee Schacher, Janely Lozoya, and Natalie Vera, while the 4×400 relay team included Puentes, Lozoya, Chavez, and Vasquez.

POWERLIFTING

ABILENE, TX – Three Dumas Demons captured medals at the 2022 Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championship last weekend at the Taylor County Expo Center.

Junior Sabien Perry placed third in the 181-pound weight class. Perry tallied 1,485 lbs. to claim the bronze medal and improve upon his seventh-place finish at the state tournament in 2021.

Hector Panda finished fourth in the 275-pound division. The junior lifted 1,690 lbs. and placed behind Ryan Smiley (Gatesville), Matthew Lopez (Rio Hondo), and Aiden Hinojosa (Corpus Christi Calallen).

Super Heavyweight Lucas Martinez took home fifth place. The senior, who finished 12th at state a year ago, lifted a total of 1,655 to earn the fifth-place medal.

SOFTBALL

DUMAS, TX – The Dumas Demonettes picked up their second district win of the season Monday with a lopsided 33-5 victory over the Perryton Lady Rangers at the Inferno Field.

Jalila Chairez went deep for the second straight game for the Demonettes, which improved its record to 20-7 overall and 2-1 in District 4-4A.

Dumas rebounded from a district-opening setback to Pampa last Thursday with a 14-4 road win against the Hereford Lady Whitefaces.

Junior Briana Vargas clubbed a pair of long balls and collected five RBIs to pace the Demonettes’ 17-hit attack.

Junior All-State corner infielder Melaney Granados went 3-for-4 with a homer, three runs, and a trio of RBIs, while junior Amery Casanova tallied a home run and drive in two scores.

The Demonettes will battle the Canyon Lady Eagles (15-9, 3-0) on the road Friday at 4:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

DUMAS, TX – The Dumas Demons continued their winnings ways Monday with an 11-4 victory against the Perryton Rangers in a District 4-4A matchup at Dumas High School.

Raul Bustamante went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs to help the Demons remain unbeaten in district competition. A 2021 First Team All-District selection, Bustamante is batting .473 (26-for-55) with a team-high 16 RBIs.

Andrew Mares, Cade Torrez, Jesus Rodriguez, and Armando Cardenas all collected multiple hits for first-year coach Tyler Lloyd’s squad.

Cameron Carlile (3-3) scattered four runs and nine hits over six innings with four strikeouts to notch the win.

Dumas 6, Hereford 2

Raul Bustamante went the distance to help the Demons open district action last Friday with a 6-2 road win over the Hereford Whitefaces (0-2).

Bustamante (2-1) limited Hereford to a pair of runs on four hits with five strikeouts over seven impressive frames to earn his second win of the season.

The Demons took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Bustamante laced a triple to the gap in right-center, and courtesy runner Yahir Mendoza dashed home on a wild pitch.

Dumas pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third, but the Whitefaces answered back with two runs in the bottom of the same frame to make it a one-run game.

A hard groundball off the bat of Bustamante plated an insurance run in the fifth, and run-scoring hits from Bustamante and Andrew Mares sealed the win.

Dumas (2-0) will travel to Canyon (3-0) on Friday for a key district encounter with the unbeaten Eagles.

TENNIS      

AMARILLO, TX – The Dumas boys’ and girls’ tennis teams will be competing Thursday and Friday at the District Tournament at Amarillo Bowie Middle School.

Dianney Ortiz and Jovan Antillon will be competing in singles action, while the duos of Karitza Bencomo/Christi Medrano and Eh Kuh Soe/Frances Kaing will compete in doubles competition.

Cadence Franks and Rogelio Escobar will represent Dumas High School in mixed doubles action.

Dumas Fares Well at Amarillo Relays Tournament

The Demons had a good showing and won several key matches at the Amarillo Relays.

Lizeth Rosales and Maycee Woodward claimed third place in Girls Doubles, and Preston and Mackinna captured the consolation title in Mixed Doubles.

GOLF

DUMAS, TX – The Dumas Demonettes golf team placed second at the District Meet #2 Monday at the Pheasant Trails golf course to advance to regionals.

The girl’s regional tournament will take place from April 20-21 at the Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock.

The Demons golf team will be looking to advance to the regional tourney when they compete at their Second District Meet on Thursday.

The boy’s regional event will be held from April 18-19 at the Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock.
