BASKETBALL

HEREFORD, TX – The Dumas Demons dropped a 75-54 decision to the Hereford Whitefaces Tuesday in a regular-season finale at Hereford High School.

Dumas (24-6, 6-4), which clinched the #2 seed in District 4-4A in Friday’s 78-74 win over Pampa, capped the minutes of standouts Johnny Reynaga (seven points) and Cristian Kelso (two points).

Hereford (15-14, 5-5) broke open a tight contest with a 13-2 run to finish the opening quarter with a 19-7 lead. Things went from bad to worse for the Demons in the second quarter as the Whitefaces outscored Dumas 24 to 14 to hold a commanding 43-21 advantage at halftime.

Jerry Rodriguez, Matthew Reynaga, and Issac Ortiz each drilled a shot from behind the arc in the third quarter to help the Demons inch closer with eight minutes left in the game.

Dumas scored six of the first seven points in the final quarter to make the score 65-40. The Demons outscored Hereford 14-10 down the stretch but still suffered a lopsided loss.

Reynaga finished with 12 points while Ortiz had eight points, and Gardipe tallied seven points.

Nathan Gomez added six points while Aaron Lawrence and Evan Hernandez chipped in five and four points, respectively.

DUMAS 78, PAMPA 74

PAMPA, TX – The Dumas Demons rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to edge the Pampa Harvesters, 78-74, last Friday night at Pampa High School. With the win, the Demons clinched the #2 seed in District 4-4A.

Seniors Cristian Kelso and Johnny Reynaga paced the Demons with a combined 50 points. Kelso tallied 25 points, five rebounds, and four steals while Reynaga had 25 points, four boards, six assists, and four steals.

Senior Issac Ortiz posted 10 points, four assists, and three steals, and sophomore Dominic Gardipe and junior Matthew Reynaga finished with eight and six points, respectively.

Dumas (24-5, 6-3) will travel to Hereford on Tuesday for the regular-season finale against the Whitefaces (14-14, 4-5).

SOCCER

CANYON, TX – The Dumas Demons cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Canyon Eagles Tuesday in a District 4-4A matchup at Canyon High School. With the win, the Demons improved to 4-9-3 overall, and 1-1 in district action.

Samuel Duarte, Miguel Estrada, and Lorenzo Ibarra each booted goals for Dumas, while Noe Estrada scored on a penalty kick. Estrada and Carlos Nava both were credited with an assist.

Dumas will travel to Pampa on Friday for a district encounter against the first-place Harvesters (10-2-1, 2-0).

BORGER 1, DUMAS 0

Borger scored a first-half goal and made it stand up to edge Dumas in a hard-fought contest to open district play last Friday night.

The lone goal came at the 20-minute mark of the first half when freshman Abdel Lozano found the back of the net for the Bulldogs off an assist from Clay Elliott.

Borger, last year’s district champion, is now 4-6-1 overall and 1-0 in district play. Dumas drops to 3-9-3 and 0-1.

CANYON LADY EAGLES BLANK DEMONETTES

DUMAS, TX – The Canyon Lady Eagles erupted for three goals in the second period and coasted to a 6-0 win over the Dumas Demonettes Tuesday in a District 4-4A matchup at Demon Stadium.

The visitors broke a scoreless deadlock on a penalty kick at the 36:20 mark, and added another goal with 28:27 left in the first period to take a 2-0 advantage into the locker room.

Canyon (7-8-1, 2-0) pushed its lead to 4-0 with two goals within the first 10 minutes of the second period to put the game out of reach early, and seal its first district win.

Dumas (2-8-1, 0-1-1) had numerous shots on goal but could not get its offensive attack in gear against a solid Canyon defensive unit.

The Demonetttes will go on the road to Pampa on Friday for a district encounter against the Lady Harvesters (6-8-1, 0-1-1).

DUMAS 3, BORGER 3

The Demonettes and the Lady Bulldogs battled to a 3-3 draw in a District 4-4A opener at Borger High School last Friday afternoon.

Arisbeth Loya tallied a pair of goals, Danesy Ortiz added a goal, and Yassmin Marchan had all three assists for Dumas.

The Demonettes improved their record to 2-7-1 overall and 0-0-1 in district play.

SOFTBALL

DUMAS, TX – Melaney Granado and Briana Yaritza both clubbed homers, and the Dumas Demonettes defeated the Tascosa Lady Rebels, 10-6, Tuesday in a non-district encounter at Inferno Field in Dumas.

Granado went 3-for-4 with a single, double, and home run to start the new season off with a bang. The talented junior infielder earned All-State and District 4-4A Offensive Player of the Year honors a year ago after batting .563 with 25 doubles, nine homers, and 37 RBIs.

Yaritza finished with a base hit and a homer, and Briana Vargas racked up 10 strikeouts to help the Demonettes win their home opener.

Amery Casanova posted two hits – a single and double – while Cam Velasquez slugged a two-bagger.

The Demonettes will be competing at the Caprock Classic Tournament in Amarillo starting Thursday at Caprock High School.
