A man who recently moved to Dumas from Dallas killed himself after shooting a woman in the neck, according to a Dumas police report.

A 911 call Sunday alerted officers to a woman who had been shot, and when they arrived at the home, they found the woman, who wasn’t named in the report, and 27-year-old Mark Leamon Smith in a bedroom. Smith had shot himself in the head and was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Barbara Mulanax after he was taken to Memorial Hospital. The woman was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo by Lifestar and is in stable condition. The report doesn’t say who called 911.

The children, a 2-year-old and an infant, were in another room when the shootings occurred, and they weren’t injured. They were released to family. The report said the family had recently moved to Dumas about two months ago, but it didn’t say what led to the shooting and suicide.

The investigation won’t be completed until evidence submitted to the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory is processed and analyzed. No charges pending against the woman at this time.
