Where: 7:00 p.m. Friday at Demon Stadium
Players to Watch: QB Grayson McCurley, RB James Bednorz, WR Victor Chavez, WR Oliver Ortiz, CB Emmanuel Ibanez, LB Brayden Boggs-Rushing (Dumas) – QB Richard Arreola, RB Bryce Sanchez, RB Jorge Chavez, SB Sebastian Mendoza, TE Eli Lynn, DE Miguel Cabrales (Roswell).
The Dumas Demons (2-2) are coming off a bye week following a disappointing loss to Randall two weeks ago. The Roswell Coyotes (2-4) have won two consecutive games and have their sights set on their third New Mexico Class 5A title in four years.
Quarterback Grayson McCurley directs the Dumas offense after taking the reins from former standout Spencer Williams, who finished his stellar career with a program-best 32 victories. The senior has completed 29-of-45 passes for five scores in his past two outings, including a 28-yard touchdown run.
Senior wideout Victor Chavez and speedy junior receiver Oliver Ortiz have emerged as McCurley’s favorite targets. Chavez, who recently surpassed 1,000 career receiving yards, tallied six catches for 117 yards and a touchdown against Plainview. Ortiz caught four passes for 95 yards against Randall, including a 50-yard scoring bomb.
Dumas is paced on the ground by running back James Bednorz. The talented senior carried the rock 43 times for 265 yards and five touchdowns in back-to-back wins over Lubbock Estacado and Plainview.
Fourth-year coach Aaron Dunnam’s defensive unit is led by a bevy of players including outside linebacker Brayden Boggs-Rushing, cornerback Emmanuel Ibanez and safety Parker Dunnam. Middle linebacker Angel Quiroz along with teammates Sabien Perry, Aurelio Medrano, Cannon Speck, and Jaydan Jara also have been steady contributors.
Senior dual-threat quarterback Richard Arreola is the main offensive weapon for the Coyotes. A hard-nosed, physical scrambler, Arreola is also the team’s leading rusher who runs behind a massive offensive front that features a trio of 300-pound linemen.
Sophomore Bryce Sanchez and Junior Jorge Chavez are a pair of bruising running backs, and speedy slotback Sebastian Mendoza is a dangerous runner and receiver.
Defensively, the Coyotes have been stingy against the inside run between the tackles, but have significant shortcomings defending the outside run. Roswell also has a leaky defensive secondary that has given up numerous big plays.
Prediction: Dumas 41 – Roswell 6
