Dumas (3-2) struck quickly on its first possession when junior quarterback Grayson McCurley connected with junior receiver Oliver Ortiz on a 53-yard pass to put the Demons in business at the Coyotes 20-yard line. Bednorz sprinted into the end zone two plays later from six yards out to give the home team an early 7-0 lead.

Coach Aaron Dunnam’s squad was knocking on the door again after a 16-yard punt set up the offense at Roswell’s 26-yard line. However, the Demons had to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Hugo Morales to make the score 10-0.

Bednorz’s second touchdown of the game pushed the lead to 17-0. The 5-foot-9 running back ran into a wall of defenders while attempting to turn the corner on the left side, turned upfield for three yards before breaking a tackle and nearly falling en route to a spectacular 47-yard run.

Murga tallied his first touchdown of the game on a one-yard run on the Demon’s next possession, and Bednorz found the end zone for the third time after junior Jess Philley recovered the ensuing kickoff to give Dumas a commanding 32-0 advantage with nine minutes remaining in the first half.

The Demons put together an 11-play, 69-yard drive near the end of the second quarter to increase the lead to 39-0. Murga accounted for 54 yards on the drive, including a 19-yard pass from junior wideout Emmanuel Ibanez on a trick play, before collecting his second score of the night on a four-yard run.

Meanwhile, Roswell (2-5) was finding little success moving the ball against a stout Dumas defensive unit. The 2018 and 2019 New Mexico Class 5A champions were forced to punt on all six of their first-half possessions.

Both squads struggled offensively in a scoreless third quarter before senior defensive end Marcos Batz sacked Roswell quarterback Richard Arreola at the two-yard line to force the visitors to punt the ball from deep in their end zone.

Dumas was back in business at the Coyotes’ 20-yard line after a short punt and went ahead 46-0 after Bednorz posted his fourth touchdown of the night on a two-yard run. But the scoring fest was still not over.

Ibanez capped the lopsided victory with a 45-yard punt return touchdown with eight minutes left in the game to help the Demons wrap up their third win in their last four outings.

Roswell nearly foiled the shutout midway in the fourth quarter when speedy slotback Sebastian Mendosa broke loose on a 59-yard run with nothing but paydirt in front of him. But Philley chased down Mendosa from behind at the Demons’ 19-yard line to prevent the touchdown.

Bednorz paced the offensive onslaught with 166 yards on 23 carries, while Murz rushed 13 times for 77 yards.

McCurley completed 9-of-14 passes for 128 yards and ran for 19 yards on three carries.

Ortiz racked up 80 yards on four catches and senior wideout Andres Perez tallied 45 yards on four receptions.
