The combination of fog and freezing temperatures early Thursday coated Panhandle highways with black ice, creating conditions that led to eight wrecks, one of them resulting in a fatality, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS Trooper Cindy Barkley said a person was killed in a one-vehicle wreck west of Pampa, but she didn’t have more information to release at this time. Early DPS reports also show one of the accidents happened in Moore County, and the other six happened in Dallam and Sherman counties.

Barkley said people in three of the wrecks sustained nonlife-threatening injuries. The Journal will update this story as DPS releases more information, including details about the wreck in Moore County.
