An 8-year-old girl remains hospitalized after she was hit by an SUV on Monday, Dumas police reported. The accident happened at about 6:38 p.m. in the 500 block of West 4th Street when the girl ran out between two parked cars and into the SUV’s path.

The girl didn’t see the SUV, and the driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the police investigation. No charges were filed against the driver, Dumas Police Sgt. Nick Jordan said.

Dumas Police Officer Allen Garland told KFDA-TV that even if the accident had occurred during the hours when the 20 mph school limit is enforced, he doesn’t think the SUV could have stopped in time.

“I believe she (the girl) would have still hit the car,” Garland told KFDA-TV.

The driver said she thinks the girl went under the car and then rolled out behind it, Garland said.
